Trinity Community Notices

Welcome to our new Church Sexton!

This week we welcome Jimmy Gaffney, our new Sexton, to our Trinity staff. Jimmy is a full-time employee and will be helping to manage the property, inside and out, for both the church and Trinity Day School. This will be his first Sunday to begin learning the ins-and-outs of opening and closing the church and helping us prepare for events. As you can imagine, there is a lot to learn!

There is also a lot to do. We do not want to overwhelm the system, and so we have developed a work order process to collect the needs and requests from Parishioners. From the list, we can help prioritize where Jimmy needs to spend his time… especially in these first months as he is learning all about us. If you notice a property need, please fill out a work order request and turn it into the church office. You will find these forms in the narthex and in McArthur Hall. Feel free to just slip it under the office door once complete. We will take it from there! If you tell him of specific repairs, needs or wishes, (other than a bathroom is out of toilet paper or soap) we’ve asked him to redirect you to the work-order request process.

Jimmy will be working closely with Deneise, Father Rob and EC Hoffman, our chair of the Property Ministry. He comes to us with a wealth of experience and terrific recommendations. We are delighted and blessed to welcome him to Trinity. Please help him feel welcome and help us acclimate him by following the process we have developed. Thank you!

Wednesday Noon Holy Eucharist
during Lent

Lent is a time in which we call ourselves as a community to prayer and reconciliation. With that in mind, starting on Wednesday with the noon service for Ash Wednesday and then each following Wednesday of Lent, we will be holding a noon Holy Eucharist in the chapel. Each Wednesday service will have Healing Prayers with Laying on of Hands.

One reason for this is a desire to have worship be the normative environment of the chapel, but also there are many who simply cannot make it to church on a Sunday morning: 35% of Americans work on Sundays. This provides an viable alternative for them.

With the Wednesday services we are "experimentally" opening another "checkout lane". We will observe the interest and then make more plans after that.

Trinity‘s Pancake Supper Wrapup
"A FEAST BEFORE A FAST"

Our Shrove Tuesday celebration on Tuesday was a great success! More than 60 people gathered to feast before the fast. TYG was well represented with eight current members, along with several alumni who returned to help create an outstanding meal. A special thank you to the phenomenal Trinity volunteers—your hard work made the evening possible!

We all had a fantastic time, though some of us are feeling a few aches and pains from the evening’s activities. Beyond the great meal, the young folks participated in the traditional Burying of the “Alleluia,” marking the Lenten practice of refraining from using the word until Easter

With Many Thanks to Our Flower Guild
You May Donate and Honor Loved Ones

Do you enjoy the beautiful flowers in our sanctuary each Sunday? We know you do!

Our Flower Guild is active and enthusiastic, and the flowers represent just one more way we offer ourselves up to God. Our team continues to grow, with the recent addition of Nancy Ruddle.

And we don't let those beautiful flowers go to waste after each service: Lyn Fox breaks the big arrangement down and distributes bouquets and small arrangements. Many times, the flowers go to shut-ins.

If you'd like to help out financially, the suggested donation to cover weekly expenses is $40.

To make an online donation, please go to trinitysolebury.org/flowers

If you'd like to honor someone on a particular week, please let Linda Kenyon or our parish administrator Denise Murad dmurad@trinitysolebury.org know. (It is traditional, but not manditory, to donate $40 for the flowers that particular week.)

8 O'Clock Moves to Chapel

At the end of February, we experimented with moving the 8:00 a.m. Sunday service into the chapel, and the response was so enthusiastic that we will be continuing that practice.

For other than the 8 o'clockers, please remember to refrain from using the chapel entrance at that time.

Church School 2024-2025

Trinity Church School meets every Sunday morning during the 9:30 a.m. service. On Sunday mornings, Sunday School teachers wait at a table by the door from the parking lot to the Day School to greet and register children and young people. Remember that children begin the worship service in the sanctuary with their families and leave with their teachers after Rob's children's homily.

Trinity's team of teachers is led by Vestry Liason Jenn Summers, assisted by Ashley Christie and Nancy Harrison. Christine Angulo cares for infants and toddlers in the nursery.. Ann Koberna leads the PreK-6th grade, assisted on a rotating basis by Fred Koberna, Melodee Fox, Dotti Brown, Carol Church, Ashley Christie, and Jenn Summers. 7th-12th grade teachers are Nancy Harrison, Bill Jaglowski, and Walter Dixon.

Lent, Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday
(a pancake, penitence and ashes mashup)

The early Church would prepare for the feast day of Easter and the baptism of new members by having a penitential season lasting forty days (excluding Sundays). During this time those to be baptized, or those who had been ejected from the church on account of public sinfulness would engage in fasting and prayer. That season became known as Lent, which simply means “Spring.”

Prior to the beginning of the fast, stockpiles of foodstuffs that people would refrain from eating were consumed in great quantities so they would not spoil. These included fats and oils, sugar, and certain meats. With the season beginning on a Wednesday, the Tuesday before became known as “Shrove Tuesday” or “Fat Tuesday” (“shrove” is the past tense form of “shrive” meaning to confess). Pancakes, having a large amount of oil and sugar in their ingredients, became a traditional meal to eat on that Tuesday, along with cakes and other pastries. The Trinity Youth Group will be hosting our Pancake Supper on March 4 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.

The following day is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and the tradition associated with that liturgy is to have ashes imposed upon ones forehead as both a historic sign of humility and a reminder of our mortality and inevitable death. That reminder of mortality encourages us to act swiftly to try to amend our lives and seek forgiveness from those whom we have offended, especially God. Our Ash Wednesday services will be at noon (in the chapel) and at 7:00 p.m. (in the main sanctuary).

Kensington Mission
Our next visit will be March 29th
Meal prep on Friday, March 28th at 1 p.m.

On Saturday March 29th, we had our most recent trip to Kensington. This time Walter Dixon joined Ryan and mysel in there.

One of the things that we noticed was that there was a lot more foot traffic on the street this month than we had seen in previous months, probable because of the milder weather.

As a result we're going to make 200 sandwich meails for our next visit, up from 150.

Our next meal prep will be next Friday, March 28th at 1 p.m.

Kim Laughlin

The Rev. Kyle Evans

With love in our hearts, we said goodbye to our beloved Kyle Evans last week. Kyle celebrated her ordination as a Deacon on last Saturday, and finished her service to Trinity on last Sunday by giving the sermon.

(You may wonder why it's 'The Rev. Evans', and not 'The Deacon Evans', or 'The Rev. Deacon Evans'.  Well, we don't really know why, but we do know that the appropriate title is 'The Rev. Kyle Evans')

Kyle is not leaving the area, and will be working at St. Andrews in Yardley. She is forever a part of Trinity, and although she will be missed, we have the pleasure of knowing that Trinity helped guide her path forward while at the same time she did so many wonderful things for us all at Trinity.

Got a Green Thumb?
Trinity Day School Needs You

Our Trinity Day School is planning on planting strawberry plants and radishes in the raised garden bed located inside their playground. They would love to have a church member who has a green thumbmeet with the students a few weeks before they plant their seeds.

You'd discuss and explain to the children the planning of the garden, what plants need to grow, the growing cycle, etc. In addition, they could use your help planting and teaching as they plant, and then revisit to check on growth and how to care for the plants. And of course, help them harvest!

It's a great way to connect the school and the parish family together in a cooperative and hands-on kind of way.

Mindfulness Meditation at Trinity Solebury 2025 Has Begun
Offered by Dr. Jeffrey Harrison

You may not realize what a generous gift it is to have Jeffrey Harrison offer this series of classes. Similar classes would cost between $300 and $650. Many thanks for the continued dedication of Jeffrey to offer this important resource to us at no cost.

Nine Sessions Started Monday, February 17th
from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

We will be offering Mindfulness Meditation training here at Trinity in the chapel for church members and others in the community interested in developing a contemplative practice. The program will run for 9 sessions, every Monday from February 17-April 7. Missing any session is highly discouraged since new material will be presented sequentially each week. However, on Saturday April 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., there will be a silent retreat session that will be imperative to attend.

If you have an interest in Mindfulness Meditation or questions about the practice, please contact Jeffrey Harrison by phone at 908-303-7265 (text preferred) or by email at drjeffreyharrison@comcast.net. Jeffrey has many years of his own personal meditation practice and many years of training individuals in his practice as a psychologist and within church communities.

Books for the program:

Workbook, edited by Jeffrey Harrison, Ph.D. (provided by Jeffrey)

Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness, by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.

Practice the Pause: Jesus's Contemplative Practice, New Brain Science, and What It Means to Be Human, by Caroline Oakes

I’m pleased that there has been continued interest in the Mindfulness Meditation program at Trinity since we first began teaching Mindfulness at Trinity in 2004. This program is modeled on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center (UMMC) because this is an excellent model for teaching meditation. However, this series of groups is designed to be used as a spiritual practice, not a psychological or medical treatment.

Diocesan News

Veterans In The Diocese

Our diocese wants to recognize all those who have served in the military whether in combat or not, by creating a video in recognition of those who served our country in our pews and pulpits for this year’s Veterans’ Day.

The culmination will be a celbration time to meet other fellow Veterans in the diocese.

To create the video, we want to gather together to interview you about your time in the military and how faith has played a part of your life. You can share just as much or as little as is comfortable for you. No question will be asked about anything that may be sensitive.

Those who would like to participate will be sent emailed the date and location. The interviews will not take place until after Easter.
Click Here to Participateor email your name, rank, military branch, and whether you'd like to be interviewed to Rev. Canon Toneh Smyth at TSmyth@diopa.org  Also, please feel free to contact Toneh with any questions.

Peacemeal
The first Sunday of every month at 3 p.m.

Peacemeal is for ALL, but especially for anyone that might be experiencing a sense of isolation and loneliness: the elderly, homeless adults and youths, or anyone who would benefit from sharing a meal with others in a safe space without judgment. And you don't have to be experiencing problems to join in the festivities. All are welcome!

We will be serving meatloaf with mashed potatoes on Sunday, March 2. Donations of appetizers, salads, hot sides, bread, and desserts are needed.

Trinity and our sister church, St. Philip's, New Hope, are partnering to host the Peacemeal dinners. We welcome volunteers to help set up/clean up and break bread with the guests.

If you would like to make a donation and support the work of Peacemeal, please include 'peacemeal ‘ in the memo field of your check or donate online at trinitysolebury.org/donate and note 'peacemeal'.

If you shop at McCaffrey's, please save your receipts and give them to Kyle Evans. As a non-profit, we can redeem them for 1% of their face value to help fund Peacemeal.

Have questions? please contact Kyle Evans at kyle.evans55@gmail.com

Special Note!! Kyle Evans, who has been a primary coordinator for the monthly Peacemeals, will not be able to continue in this role given her duties as a new deacon in the diocese. Kyle is seeking one or more individuals to assume that role. Please contact Kyle if you are interested in learning more.

Healing Prayers First Sunday of Every Month

On the first Sunday of each month, healing prayers are available at both of Trinity's services during Communion. Prayer requests can be for oneself, a friend or family member, or a local, regional, national or international issue. Individuals of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come to the healing stations.

Share Your Prayer Concerns
Is something or someone on your mind as you arrive at church?

Each Sunday there is a sheet on the entryway table in the narthex where parishioners, visitors, and other church attendees can write their prayer requests for that Sunday. The page will include options for those requiring healing, special intentions, or the deceased. Those names will be included for that Sunday and the Sunday following, unless requested otherwise.

If you would like to have the names added to the long-term prayer list, please visit trinitysolebury.org/prayerlist or contact the church office.

Centering Prayer at Trinity Every Tuesday Morning
Be still and know that I am God - Psalm 46:10

Centering Prayer has been an active ministry at Trinity since the late 1990's. We practice Centering Prayer in the Chapel weekly on Tuesday mornings from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and all are welcome. Come whenever you can.

Centering Prayer is a type of Christian contemplation that provides an opportunity to sit quietly in God’s presence, in stillness for greater awareness of God in our busy daily lives. We intentionally put aside all thoughts of the past and of the future, being aware only of "now".

When we meet we remember those in need. We practice 20 minutes of silent meditation. We send cards to those in our prayers.

One technique of Centering Prayer employs a sacred word that we each choose on our own. Then we silently recall it to return to God’s presence when we are distracted by thoughts, feelings, and images. In Centering Prayer we believe that the beginning and the end of prayer is learning how to be still before God. Thoughts are the inevitable and normal part of Centering Prayer and by returning to our sacred word we are expressing our "intention to consent to God's presence and action within" (Thomas Keating)

Consider coming to Centering Prayer on Tuesdays. It is a gentle retreat, if only for 20 minutes, from our busy daily lives.
