Trinity Sunday
Sunday June 4th

WHAT IS A "FEAST OF TITLE"?

In the global Anglican tradition, of which The Episcopal Church is a prime player, there are 'patronal feasts' and 'feasts of title." The essential difference is that some (many, really!) parish churches are named for a patron saint who is celebrated on a set feast day (not a Sunday, though) for the "building up of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12.) For example, each year, St. Thomas's, New York City, marks December 21st, and St. Luke's in Darien  Connecticut, celebrates October 18th, and so on...

But what about the 'Christ' churches or the churches named for 'the Incarnation' or 'the Ascension' or, you guessed it, 'the Trinity'!? These parishes don't celebrate patronal feasts but rather feasts of title. A subtle yet useful distinction, that I have seen over years of serving in churches both named for saints and godly expression.

At St. Bartholomew's, White Plains, a simpler liturgical time in the 1980s found us just passing over the dog-days' feast of St. Bartholomew on August 24th! But in the 1990s, at St. James Church in St. James (Long Island), from time to time we tried to mark July 24th with relaxed outdoor worship and a picnic, but, sadly, it never really took. However, for twenty-four years as rector of Trinity Church on Capitol Square in downtown Columbus (OH), I led lively celebrations of our feast of title on the First Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday.

This coming Sunday is that feast for us in Solebury; and we mark it with hymns and prayers and reflections on the power of God in relation within the the Divine Self: namely, the 'holy dance' between Creator and Redeemer and Equipper/Sanctifier that  early Greek theology named 'Trinity.'

This feast takes us beyond an intellectual construct or a mind-teasing riddle. It is an invitation to relationships grounded in Divine Love..."a love that has skin on it," which is how one contemporary thinker defines JUSTICE.

Our feast of title is mostly a time to build up Christ's body all over again, and have a big party doing it!

See you on Trinity Sunday,

(The Rev.) Dick Burnett
Interim Rector

Next Sunday, June 11

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his ordination

The Rev. Richard Burnett

Bids us farewell as interim

Come celebrate the joyous and enriching time we had together as a parish family

Trinity Completes Sacred Ground:
Small Group Dialogues on Race and Faith.

A "Sending Forth" commissioning wil take place during the service Sunday, 9:30 a.m., June 11, 2023.

Sacred Ground is a film and readings based dialogue series on race, from the viewpoint of tenets of Christian beliefs. Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race and racism, often encountering historical events that were not covered in our history books. Sacred Ground is sponsored by the National Episcopal Church in line with the Church's long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in  our ministries and our society.

Beginning in January, 2023, approximately 20 participants met in two groups, every other week, and were invited to peel away the layers of assumptions and unconscious beliefs that have contributed to the divides of the present day, not to feel guilt but to see through the eyes of the other. Participants came to understand the history of many different immigrant groups of all races as well as the native peoples who were here when Europeans arrived. Because of the trust and respect that served as the basis for each group's discussions, a sense of closeness and love grew among group members. Participants were experiencing new ideas while in fellowship with other parishoners. The variety of books, articles, videos, and films came from many sources and were entertaining, sometimes heartbreaking,  as well as educational.

It is hoped by facilitators Betty Stagg, John Dey, and Bruce Harris that more Sacred Ground groups or other small groups centered around racial and social justice issues can be formed in the coming year.

Contact bettystagg@gmail.com or go to https://www.episcopalchurch.org/sacred-ground/ for more information on "Sacred Ground".

Ginny's 2nd Retirement
Retirement #3 is on the way!

Last Sunday we celebrated 23 years with Ginny as she retires from service at Trinity. The impact of Ginny on Trinity is hard to describe. She was a rock upon which we relied during the tenure of 3 rectors and during 3 transitions.  She has shared many dynamic sermons, compassionate caring, scholarly inquiry, and annual Lenten and Advent days of spiritual reflection.  And we'll never forget her passion for Frederick Buechner and George Herbert and a host of saints, including Hildegard von Bingen, Julian of Norwich and the "many Mary's". Ginny will be leaving for Maine shortly, having taken a week off to relax and recollect herself.  But the ever caring Ginny will be busy in Maine, with a baptism, a wedding, a memorial service, and a reprise of her lenten presentation of 'Conversatio'. In the fall she will have her 3rd carreer retirement... this time from All Saint's by the Sea.

We can expect to see Ginny from time to time in the pews... "but not at the 8'oclock" she adamently says!  She will be taking time to regain her energies and attend occasionally at Trinity, and occsasionally at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Pennington, where her husband Ron was a choir member and she was a former organist/choir master.

Matt Mackenson created a 'Christmas Poem' for Ginny.  Click here to read it.

Trey Wilson

Landscape Designer

Horticultural Therapist

Nature Therapy Guide

Trey will lead a  forum in the Chapel at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, June 25, 2023. He will be delivering the message at the 9:30 service that morning. He will be speaking to us about the healing offered through our experience of  plants, trees, and all of God's sacred creation.

A Quick Note about Ginny Sheay and Lighthouses

Last week I called Ginny to ask her a question, and during our conversation she described our church as the 'beacon on the hill': beacon being for her a reference to the lighthouses of Maine.  So, as a tribute to Ginny a small change has been made in the weekly notices: under the picture at the top, the text has been changed from 'the church on the hill', to 'the beacon on the hill' - Jon Hayward

Trinity’s Rector Search Committee has been hard at work identifying and gettting to know candidates. The Search Committee wants us to know that every candidate who has expressed an interest in this position has been interviewed at least once, and often more than once. A Prayer for the Parish in the Time of Transition

Glorious and gracious God, you have blessed Trinity Church with a goodly heritage of worship, fellowship, and service. And you have inspired our pastoral leaders, over the years,to keep us faithful to the mission of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ to each succeeding generation. For this we are thankful.

Now as we search for a new Rector, we seek your guidance and insight to help us discern whom you would have us call to be our companion, as together we go forward into the future of your advancing Kingdom. May that Priest be wise, compassionate, thoughtful, and filled with the Holy Spirit.

In the meantime, may we be strong and united in one common purpose, supporting and caring for one another and active with you in the fragile world around us.

All this we ask in the name of the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Rev. John D. Bartle +
