Trinity Welcomes Father Rob Baldwin
as our New Rector
Barbara Tortorello
Search Committee Chair

I am extremely pleased to announce that the Search Committee has most enthusiastically recommended and the Vestry has unanimously voted to call
THE VERY REVEREND ROBERT EVAN BALDWIN
Rector, Trinity Episcopal Church, Lawrence, Kansas
Dean of the Northeast Convocation of the Diocese of Kansas
Chaplain, Bishop Seabury Academy, Lawrence, Kansas
to be our new Rector.
'Father Rob' is intelligent, thoughtful, devout, and humble. He puts others ahead of himself, and his fundamental nature is to listen quietly and to think carefully and critically while comforting and caring for others. He is a very experienced and enthusiastic parish priest, possessed of the intellect and integrity, the empathy and love of Episcopal liturgy, and the optimism and energy to lead Trinity Solebury in the years ahead. In our Sunday Prayer for the Parish in the Time of Transition, we pray that the priest we call be “wise, compassionate, thoughtful, and filled with the Holy Spirit.” The Very Reverend Robert Baldwin is that person . He is the priest for whom we have been waiting.
About Father Rob
Fr. Rob was ordained out of the diocese of Southern Ohio in 2002, where he served his first parish in Piqua, Ohio until 2010. Following that he was called to be rector of Trinity Church in Lawrence, Kansas, where he also served as Dean of the Northeast Convocation of the Diocese of Kansas and Chaplain to Bishop Seabury Academy, an Episcopal private school. He also served for a time on the Special Education Advisory Commission for the Lawrence Unified School District and taught Anglican Identity at the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry.
He has two adult children, Alex and Abigail, a teenage stepchild Maura, and with his wife Mandy have a daughter Parker, who is eighteen months old. In addition to being a caregiver for their daughter, Mandy is also an accomplished flautist, athlete, and quilter.
When asked about his new calling, Father Rob said "I am looking forward to getting to know Trinity Church, and together discerning God’s call for us to spread the Gospel. I have already experienced your love, compassion, artistic gifts, and commitment to discipleship. Mandy and I are excited to get to know all of you and join your community of faith, fellowship, and joy. The next several weeks will be a time of transition with moving our home to Solebury, lining up the resources for our children, and discovering the many treasures in Bucks County."

When will we be able to meet Father Rob
Father Rob will be making occasional visits in late August and early September to meet with staff, finalize his moving plans and line up other resources his family will need. A meet-and-greet for all is being planned in the near future — details coming soon. His first worship service at Trinity will be September 24th. In the meantime, you may contact Father Rob at rbaldwin@trinitysolebury.org

BARRIE LEE SUMMERS
1943-2023
Sadly, our beloved Barrie Summers passed away Saturday evening, August 19. She was surrounded by her loving family. Barrie was under hospice care and to the last was comfortable and at peace. She was a faithful companion with her husband Patrick for 58 years and loving and supportive of her three children, Edward, John and Matthew and their families, including grandmother to five grandchildren. Barrie exemplified the best in caring for all, especially in the church, where her welcome touched so many people.
The memorial service for Barrie will be held at Trinity Church at 11am on Saturday September 16th, followed by internment in the Trinity Church Cemetery. There will be a reception afterwards at the church.
In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Barrie may be made to:

Thank You
With joy in our hearts, we want to thank the parish profile committee, search committee, the vestry and most of all, all of you our parishioners. Since February 2022, everyone at Trinity has stepped up to fill in and help where ever help was needed. The result is an energized parish ready to take on the new directions to which God is calling us. That enabled us to carefully nurture a thoughtful and prayerful discernment process.
Now, eighteen months after commencing work in the search committee, and after many bumps on the road and some setbacks, a candidate has been sent to us that is meant to be for us. The search committee put forward their recommendation, which the vestry has unanimously approved.
This has not been an easy process for the search committee. They have worked tirelessly through endless meeting and conference calls in what some of their members called "their second full time job". Barbara Torterello guided the process forward through all of their challenges with steadfast resolve.
As a result, we will shortly have our new Rector: The Very Reverend Robert Baldwin. So, it is with great joy that, as of today, August 13, 2023, we are able to thank and officially dismiss the parish profile committee and the search committee, with greatest gratitude for all your hard work.

Rectory Renaissance

Our rectory will be reborn in the spirit of it's original creation
The Prayer for the Parish in the Time of Transition, penned by The Rev. Dr. John Bartle for our use in worship services over the past eighteen months, starts with a recognition of God's blessings to Trinity Solebury Parish. It mentions a "goodly heritage of worship, fellowship, and service." We are also blessed with a beautiful physical campus, including a traditional rectory which has served as an office and meeting space since 1998.
As we have all seen, one of the major effects of the 2020 pandemic was the change in how and where office business is conducted. That includes our church office. Trinity's rectory office, that had once been a beehive of activity, became a neglected space and an underutilized resource. But now, our new Rector, Rev. Rob Baldwin and his family, have offered us an opportunity and a gift: to once again have a rectory that will be a warm and inviting family home.
We are fortunate to have an experienced builder and contractor in our congregation, Frank Tortorello, who has come up with a plan that will convert the rectory back into a residence with minimal structural changes. Together with Gene Fox, they will shepherd the conversion process. Thankfully, the rectory has retained many charming architectural details from the 1950's that only need some loving touches to bring them back to life.
One of the unanticipated challenges faced by the search committee was the changing environment for clergy relocation. Clergy families, especially young families, are finding it difficult to navigate new financial realities and at the same time to live reasonably comfortably in the community they are serving. We are extremely fortunate that we have the physical resources to meet this challenge, and that the Baldwins see themselves living happily on our church campus in the rectory. It will be a joy to watch the transformation over the coming months!

Trinity's first but not last Bingo and Fried Chicken Night was a big success!
Great food and lots of laughs warmed the hearts of our Trinity community last Saturday evening. Some folks we haven't seen in a while came out for the event. Parishoners brought along friends who were introduced to Trinity's hospitality and welcoming atmosphere. Hospitality chairperson, Kevin Clark, outdid himself with a table full of whimsical, humorous prizes for lucky winners. Trinity youth Grant Christie, Lindsay Christie, and Tom Vieiradias were witty, charming, but most of all competent in their posts as number callers. There was a mystery though. One table had more winners than would have been likely given the pure chance nature of the game of bingo. Linda Kenyon won twice! What this means is that those who attended are eager for a rematch. Will crazy luck strike again? Make sure you don't miss the next Bingo and Fried Chicken Night!

Trinity Nursery On The Move!

Trinity Update - Hawaiian Fire
Many of you may remember that former Trinity members Lisa Leydon and Michele Natale and family moved to Hawaii. I have reached out to both of them. They both live in Oahu and are fine. However, the loss of life in historic and artisan communities is devastating. I asked about ways that people can offer support and Lisa offered that cash donations are being accepted by Hawaii's Salvation Army division at https://hawaii.salvationarmy.org/, the Hawaii Community Foundation Maui Strong fund and the Maui Food Bank, to name a few. Epicopal Relief and Development is also accepting donations at https://support.episcopalrelief.org/maui-wildfire-2023/ |

Invitation to Sacred Ground
Dialogue on Race and Faith
In a few weeks, we plan to begin a new study group using this powerful curriculum of documentary films and readings developed by The Episcopal Church. It invites participants to explore issues related to race and racism in a prayerful and respectful way. It is a walk back through history - both personal and collective - framed as a spiritual journey, grounded in faith. The small group will meet approximately every two weeks for 11 sessions. Dates and times are being identified; but if you would like to consider it or learn more about it, please contact Betty Stagg or John Dey.
Episcopal Community Services School Supply Drive!!

The 2023-2024 school year is just around the corner! At Episcopal Community Services, we are thinking about how to best serve the children throughout Philadelphia whose families benefit from wide range of services and programs provided at its St. Barnabas Community Resource Center, helping them to overcome intergenerational poverty.
Did you know that the average Pennsylvania family spends $814 a year on school clothes and supplies? And, given inflation, and the elimination of COVID assistance and the expanded child tax credit, that many Philadelphia families cannot afford to purchase any school supplies? ECS wants to ensure that our West Philadelphia youth are fully equipped to thrive in the upcoming school year!
The ECS school supply drive deadline is Thursday, August 24, 2023.
Children will receive their supplies and also engage in a variety of fun activities at the annual school drive event on Thursday, August 31, 3-6pm. Games, face painting, and food will be among the afternoon choices. While the young people enjoy the festivities, information about the many programs at St. Barnabas Community Resource Center and tours of the facility will be provided. We hope you can join us.

Death of Bill Tinsman
Bill Tinsman died Sunday, Aug. 6, at Chandler Hall in Newtown.
He had been diagnosed with brain cancer exactly a year to the day before his death, said his sister Patsy Tinsman, wife of Trinity member Dick Wallace. He was 75.
He and his family were immeasurably entwined with Lumberville and Solebury. When people think of Bill they recall his warmth, his environmental passions, and his community service to Solebury.
We will all miss the special greeting you would get from Bill at Tinsman's Lumber on every visit.

A festival of Ukrainian folk music, dance, foods and arts and crafts Exciting, spectacular, dazzling, breathtaking, exhilarating, spirited, soulful, enchanting, captivating, and intriguing - modest words which describe but by no means capture the essence of Ukrainian folk art, music, and dance. From the rich color and deep symbolism of the delicate "pysanka" (Ukrainian Easter Egg) to the thunderous, power, rhythm and strength of "HOPAK" - the world’s most exciting ethnic dance, and every brilliant "Kolomiyka" (polka) and soulful folk song. The festival is at the Ukrainian American Sport Center - Tryzub Admission: $15 ($2 of each paid admission will be donated to Humanitarian Relief of Victims of War in Ukraine); Kids under 15 Free; Free Parking. For complete information visit www.tryzub.org/festival2023 | Ukranian History Lesson: Tryzub - The Trident
Originally, the trident was the pre-Christian symbol of the Greek and Roman sea-gods Poseidon and Neptune. It came to represent sovereignty and dominion over the sea by those countries whose way of life involved much travel and trade by - and waging wars on water. Stemming from the Scandinavian royal house of Rurik, the early monarchs of Ukraine, sitting in Ukraine’s ancient capital city of Kyiv (“Kiev”), adopted the Tryzub in the latter half of the tenth century. In approximately 988, St. Volodymyr (“Vladimir”) the Great, the baptizer of Ukraine, in European monarchic style, further shaped the Tryzub into a “Royal Cypher”. He shaped the ends of the trident to depict two Cyrillic "B" (in Latin script “V”) letters, facing each other, thereby alluding to his name, “Volodymyr Velyky”. He also maintained a winged shape as an adaptation of the “Rurik Falcon” family crest. Being the Baptizer of Ukraine, the three bars of Grand Prince Volodymyr’s trident also signified the Christian mystery of the Holy Trinity. The gold and blue colors that depict the traditional Trident were those of Byzantium and Scandinavia, especially Sweden, where blue signifies royalty (i.e. "blue-blood") and gold signifies the crown.
